When it comes to pet microchips, there are several manufacturers to choose from. Microchip manufacturers all share the same purpose – keeping your pet safer by identifying them if they ever go missing. However, not all pet microchip manufacturers offer the same services and prices.  PetLink’s services are easy to locate and utilize when you need them the most, all at a low price. PetLink offers a one-time registration fee when creating an account for your pet.  There are no additional fees for updating account information. If you find a missing pet, PetLink’s online search function searches not only its database, but also uses the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) lookup tool to provide a list of other databases the microchip may be registered with or who the microchip was manufactured by if not registered.

Benefits of Microchipping Your Pet

Microchipping your pet comes with many important benefits. Other forms of pet ID, such as tags and collars, can be broken, lost, removed, etc. Pet microchips are the only permanent and nearly indestructible device to identify your pet. If a pet goes missing, a microchip is the most reliable solution for reuniting a pet with its owner. Any veterinarian or animal rescue organization will have the ability to look up a pet’s information by scanning for a microchip.

Microchipping is also inexpensive and typically requires no maintenance. As long as the pet’s microchip number is registered with PetLink and the owner’s information is current, no further action is required. Having your pet microchipped is a safety measure that offers pet owners a sense of security and peace of mind.

How to Find Your Pet’s Microchip Manufacturer

Finding your pet’s microchip manufacturer is simple. If you have access to the documentation from the microchip procedure, the number and manufacturer should be listed. If you do not have access to the documentation, a veterinarian or animal shelter can scan the pet to retrieve the microchip number. Scanners are also available to purchase so anyone can scan a pet’s microchip themselves. There are many affordable options online for buying a microchip scanner. The microchip number can be used to determine the manufacturer by using an online lookup. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) website offers a lookup tool for finding microchip manufacturer and registry information.

Pet Microchip FAQs

An RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) pet microchip is a tiny passive electronic transponder about the size of a rice grain. The chip is implanted painlessly by a veterinarian under the pet’s skin and requires no battery since it’s only activated when scanned. When a scanner passes over the chip, it uses radio waves to power up the chip momentarily, which then transmits a unique identification number back to the scanner.

A microchip is NOT a GPS tracker – it simply stores a permanent ID number that links to owner information in a registry database.

When you have your pet microchipped, your vet should confirm whether they have registered the chip for you. If not, you will need to do this as soon as you leave the vet. It is crucial every pet’s microchip is registered with the owner’s contact information.

Without registering your pet, the microchip won’t have your contact details associated with it, which prevents you being reunited with your pet if it ever goes missing. Register your chip with PetLink today:

  • PetLink is the longest serving and most trusted microchip registry in the US
  • Have 24/7 access to the PetLink call centre, staffed by our pet reunification team
  • Lifetime microchip registration – no monthly fees, peace of mind forever

Each microchip is assigned a unique identification number. A veterinarian or animal shelter professional is able to scan the chip to display the ID number, which is then used to search a database. The database will show the pet’s information as well as their owner’s information – which is why it is crucial as a responsible pet parent to always keep your contact details updated in your PetLink account.
