How do I transfer my pet to a new owner?

To transfer your registered pet to a new owner electronically, please follow these instructions:

  • Login to your account (input your e-mail address and password)
  • Input your e-mail address and password in the appropriate fields
  • Select “Change Owner” from the left menu
  • Select the pet who is to be transferred to the new owner
  • Input the new owner’s e-mail address and click “Submit”
  • PetLink will e-mail the new owner and ask for confirmation
  • PetLink will request a transfer fee of $19.99 from the new owner. Once paid, the transfer will be confirmed and completed.

You will receive a confirmation email from PetLink once we receive an acceptance from the new owner and the
transfer is complete. Please ensure the new owner’s spam filter allows emails from PetLink. From then on, you
will no longer receive any communications from PetLink regarding this pet.

How do I transfer ownership of my new pet to my name?

Your adopted pet may already be registered in PetLink. Enter your pet’s microchip code in the Microchip Search field on
the right or on the PetLink homepage to see if your pet is already registered in PetLink.

If The Pet Is Not Already Registered in PetLink

To register your new pet in PetLink:

  • If you do not have an existing PetLink account – click on the green “Register your pet now” button on the PetLink homepage and follow the on-screen instructions to register your new pet
  • If you have an existing PetLink account, please login and select “Register New Pet” from the left menu

If The Pet Is Already Registered

If the previous owner did transfer pet ownership directly to you through the “Change Owner” function on PetLink,
you will receive an email from with a link to create your own PetLink account.

If the previous owner did not transfer pet ownership directly to you through the “Change Owner” function on
PetLink, you will need to download and complete the PetLink Transfer of Ownership Form.

Along with the transfer of ownership form, PetLink requires proof of ownership documentation to show that you are the
rightful owner of the adopted pet. Proof of ownership documentation can be any one of the following:

  • A copy of your Pet Adoption Agreement from your rescue or shelter organization
  • A copy of your pet license from your city or town
  • A copy of your pet’s rabies certificate
  • Vet records or bills that are in your name

Once you have all the proper documentation needed to complete the transfer of ownership, please return the form as indicated
by email or mail with payment of $19.99 (credit card or check payable to PetLink/Datamars). You will be sent a confirmation
after we receive the transfer form and your payment has been processed.

If for some reason you do not have supporting documentation, a member of our PetLink Support Team will contact the previous
registered owner to make sure that it is ok to transfer the pet. Please note we will not give out any of your personal contact
information to the previous owner. Once we have the previous owner’s confirmation, we will complete the transfer process.

Can my transfer of ownership request be denied?

In the unlikely event that the previous owner contests the transfer, we
will place the transfer request on hold until a member of our Support
Team can contact all interested parties to confirm whether this
transfer can be processed or not.
