Safely Home: Happy to be Home
My wife Kathy and I frequently travel in our Motorhome to various Road Racing circuits around the country in support of our friends’ racing activities with the Sports Car Club of America. Accompanying us on our journeys are our Black Lab Bentley and our black cat named Spridget. In September of 2025 we drove to Elkhart Lake, WI to attend the SCCA’s Road Racing Championship event at Road America. On the Monday after our arrival Spridget bolted upon my opening the MH door and headed into the woods. Over the ensuing 7 days numerous attempts were made to entice him to come back without success.
Leaving the track to drive back to our home in Sharpsburg, MD without Spridget was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.
It was a particularly nasty winter in Wisconsin this past winter and while we held out hope the likelihood of our cat returning home grew less and less likely.
On the morning of the 29th of May 2026 Kathy answered the phone to hear a voice from the Animal Shelter in Sheboygan, WI asking if our cats name was Spridget. Apparently, someone from Plymouth WI had turned him in to the Shelter the day before; eight months to the day after he ran away. May 29th also happens to be Kathy’s birthday.
Plans were made and Sunday morning at 06:00 I left home in my truck and drove to Sheboygan and got a room for the night. Monday morning the good people at the shelter opened the door early so that I could get on the road with Spridget and return him to his mom in Sharpsburg on Monday evening. Kathy, Bentley, Ghost (the other cat in the house), and I are all very happy to have Spridget home again and he has had his travel privileges revoked and will spend more time with his brother (Ghost) in the future.
As you can see in the picture, he fell right back in the lounge routine at home.
