Blog: Is Your Pet a Healthy Weight?
Pet obesity is a growing concern, but knowing where to start can make a difference.
Our pets are part of the family, and treats, extra portions and the occasional table scrap are easy ways to show them we care. But those little extras can add up over time.
According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 59% of dogs and 61% of cats in the U.S. were classified as overweight or obese in 2022. That makes maintaining a healthy body condition an important part of looking after our pets.
The good news? There are simple ways to start understanding your pet’s weight and making healthier choices together.

Start by checking their body condition
Your pet’s weight isn’t the only thing that matters. Their body condition can give you a better indication of whether they’re underweight, at a healthy body condition, overweight or have obesity.
A few simple checks can help you get started. Look at your pet from above and from the side, and gently feel around their ribs. You should be able to feel their ribs without a thick layer of fat, and see some definition around their waist.
Every pet is different, though, so if you’re unsure about what you’re seeing or feeling, speak to your vet.

Don’t forget the extras
It’s easy to focus on what’s going into your pet’s food bowl and overlook everything else they eat during the day.
Treats, chews and other extras all contribute to their overall calorie intake. Looking at the bigger picture can help you understand whether your pet is getting the right amount for their individual needs.

Ready to take the next step?
If you’re concerned about your pet’s weight, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
