In 2016, I adopted a sweet little Chihuahua named Jimmy. He quickly became a beloved part of my life—full of charm, personality, and love. By the end of the following year, my circumstances had changed, and I had to move. I was heartbroken knowing I couldn’t afford to keep Jimmy, so I made the difficult decision to find him a new home. I found a family who truly adored him. The husband especially bonded with Jimmy—he would feed him his favorite snack, goat cheese, and bought him a cozy winter jacket and even little shoes.
Knowing Jimmy was loved and well cared for gave me peace of mind. They had plans to adopt him formally, but the process was never completed—and his microchip remained registered under my name. Unfortunately, in 2018, everything changed. My friend could no longer care for Jimmy while also caring for her husband, who had developed cancer. She placed Jimmy with an animal sitter, intending it to be temporary—but he was never picked up.
After her husband passed away, I learned what had happened. I hadn’t known about his illness or Jimmy’s situation. My husband, my daughter, and I immediately went to speak with the sitter, hoping to bring Jimmy home or at least find out where he was. But we were told that Jimmy had already been given away. We tried everything to find out his whereabouts so we could stay in touch with the new owners, but we had no success. We left heartbroken, carrying the weight of not knowing where Jimmy was or what his life had become.
Time passed, and although we never forgot him, we didn’t think we would ever see him again.
Then, on Saturday the 21st, everything changed. I received a call from the Yavapai Humane Society—they had Jimmy. Because his microchip was still registered in my name, they were able to contact me. We were overwhelmed with emotion. We had long hoped he was alive and safe, but never imagined we would get the chance to see him again. Without hesitation, we got in the car and headed to Arizona.
The journey wasn’t easy. About two hours into the trip, my car just wouldn’t charge. We had to spend the night in the car, unsure of how we would continue. Thankfully, a friend stepped in and rented a U-Haul truck and trailer to tow our car back home. We arrived Sunday afternoon, exhausted but determined. At 3 a.m., we tried again—this time in my daughter’s car. And this time, we made it. When we finally saw Jimmy, it was nothing short of incredible—he recognized us. After all that time, he still knew who we were.
Now, Jimmy is back home where he belongs. He is adjusting to life with our two cats, and little by little, they are learning from each other. In fact, the cats have even started venturing outside after watching Jimmy go on short walks and bathroom breaks. It hasn’t been without challenges—Jimmy needs some potty training, and we are working on getting him a full veterinary check-up and dental care. But none of that compares to the joy of having him back.
We are truly amazed by this journey. After years of uncertainty, Jimmy found his way back to us—and we are beyond grateful. His story is a powerful reminder of how important it is to keep your pet’s microchip registered and up to date. In our case, that connection is what brought Jimmy back home.
